WhatsApp Business API Setup: Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

Everything you need to set up the WhatsApp Cloud API (official) — Meta Business Manager, phone number verification, template approval, and webhook configuration.

The WhatsApp Cloud API (officially called the WhatsApp Business API or WABA) is Meta's official way for businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale. This guide walks you through the complete setup process.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A Meta Business Manager account (free)
  • A Facebook Business page
  • A phone number NOT already registered with WhatsApp (you'll need a fresh number for the API)
  • Business verification documents (optional, but needed for higher messaging limits)

Step 1: Create a Meta App

Go to developers.facebook.com → My Apps → Create App. Select "Business" as the type. Give it a name (e.g., "Whaterakt Integration").

Step 2: Add the WhatsApp Product

In your app dashboard, click "Add Product" → find "WhatsApp" → click "Set Up". This generates your:

  • App ID and App Secret
  • Temporary Access Token (valid for 24 hours — you'll generate a permanent one later)
  • WhatsApp Business Account ID (WABA ID)
  • Phone Number ID (a test number Meta provides)

Step 3: Add Your Phone Number

Under WhatsApp → API Setup, click "Add phone number". Enter your business name, the phone number you want to use, and verify it via SMS or call. This number will be your official WhatsApp Business number.

Step 4: Verify Your Business

Go to Meta Business Manager → Business Settings → Security Center → Business Verification. Submit your business documents (GST certificate, utility bill). Verification takes 2-7 days and unlocks higher messaging limits (tier upgrades from 1K → 10K → 100K messages per 24 hours).

Step 5: Create Message Templates

Templates are pre-approved message formats required for initiating conversations (business-initiated messages). Go to WhatsApp Manager → Message Templates → Create Template.

Choose a category:

  • MARKETING: Promotions, offers, product announcements
  • UTILITY: Account updates, appointment reminders, payment receipts
  • AUTHENTICATION: OTP/login codes

Write your message with variables ({{1}}, {{2}}), add example values, and submit. Approval takes 1-48 hours.

Step 6: Connect to Whaterakt

In Whaterakt, go to Devices → Add Connection → choose "WhatsApp Cloud API". Enter your:

  • Phone Number ID
  • Access Token (generate a permanent one in Meta App → System User → Add)
  • WABA ID
  • App ID + Secret

Whaterakt handles webhook configuration, message templates syncing, and two-way messaging automatically once connected.

Step 7: Configure Webhooks

Whaterakt configures webhooks automatically when you connect via the embedded signup. If you're setting up manually, point the webhook URL to your Whaterakt instance and subscribe to these events:

  • messages (inbound messages)
  • message_status (delivery/read receipts)
  • template_status_update (template approval changes)

Messaging Limits (Important)

WhatsApp enforces tiered limits on how many business-initiated messages you can send per 24 hours:

  • Tier 1: 1,000 conversations / 24h
  • Tier 2: 10,000 conversations / 24h
  • Tier 3: 100,000 conversations / 24h
  • Tier 4: Unlimited (requires verification + volume history)

Tiers upgrade automatically as you maintain quality and volume. Customer-initiated messages (replies to your broadcasts) don't count against this limit.

Conclusion

Setting up the WhatsApp Business API takes 1-2 hours initially, plus a few days for business verification. Once live, you get a reliable, official, compliant channel for bulk messaging, automation, and customer support. Whaterakt makes the setup painless — connect your WABA in minutes and start sending.
